Describing and Authors' Photo
Author photos are important parts of a book, and need to be described. You can approach the description the way you would describe any portrait.
The summary sentence can state it is the author's portrait.
Remember to include:

Facial expression if it stands out
Any extra details only if they stand out (sometimes they are holding props, or have a pet with them, or are sitting outside in a garden, etc..)
